I am working on one of the classes I teach on terrorism. The last assignment was on the use of technology by terrorist organizations. I find it an interesting topic considering all of the recent events. Terrorist organizations are using technology far more than we realize and going undetected. The main reason is law enforcement, for the most part, is not in cyber to investigate crimes or terrorist acts. Many people look at cyber as a federal problem to deal with, no one else. I will tell you that it is 100% wrong! Anyone in law enforcement should be involved with cyber or technology.  If you are in law enforcement or going into law enforcement, you need not ignore the cyber threat. The cyber threat is real, and it is only going to get worse because little to nothing is being done about it, especially in the area of terrorism. Technology is Making Terrorists More Effective—And Harder to Thwart This was an article from earlier this year. It is a good article, and I don’t think it addr
I was trying to figure out what to write about; passwords, passphrases, MFA kept coming to mind. I thought no need for that seems to always be in an issue, surely people are taking notice. A couple of days later, I get an email from Krebs on Security about the title "Ukraine Nabs Suspect in 773M Password 'Megabreach’”. Today I was contacted by a friend that had an online shopping network compromised, and her credit card information was stolen. Ok, I guess we need to talk some more about passwords, passphrases, MFA, and keeping our accounts safe. Ok, so what is the difference between a password and a passphrase? Great question! According to a hacker called “Tinker” he claims an eight-character password no matter the
You cannot go a day without a cyber incident followed up with a discussion about the shortage of InfoSec professionals needed. These incidents have a lasting impact and take years for organizations to recover and some close due to the magnitude of the event.  The brand reputation of an organization can last years, not to mention the financial loss. Target, Home Depot, OPM, and Equifax are prime examples of some of the more significant data breaches that come to anyone's minds when discussing cyber incidents.   Many reports are indicating by 2021, there will be over 3 million vacancies in InfoSec globally, with over 500k in the US alone. Fortunately, there is a push to build up the InfoSec workforce; unfortunately, most of this effort is placed on K-12 students. There is a  large group of individuals that would be perfect for a career in InfoSec, public safety.   Most public safety has 20-year retirements, allowing individuals to retire and start a second career.
